Cincinnati is a city in the southwest of the US state of Ohio, on the Ohio River, across the water from Kentucky. It grew as a river town and later as a factory town — meat, soap, machines — so older books call it an important industrial centre. English speakers say it sin-sin-NAT-ee, which does not look like the spelling. The name is not a Native American word, which students sometimes guess. It comes from the Society of the Cincinnati, a group of American Revolutionary War officers, who named themselves after Cincinnatus, a Roman farmer-leader famous for doing his duty and then going back to his farm. students mostly meet it as a place on a map, in American sport, or as a US city name in the news.
