Ciao is a light way to say goodbye. It is Italian, and English borrowed it as a warm little wave in a word: friends toss it as they leave, often with a smile. It is too casual for a job interview, a serious letter, or anyone you must show distance to. In English it is extra colour, not the everyday goodbye — bye and see you still do most of the work. Though actually, in Italian ciao is also hello: the same word for coming and going. English speakers mostly use it when they go. You will hear it more in cafés, travel, and films than in a quiet British office.
ciao（義式的「掰」；熟人才說）
組成Borrowed from Italian ciao, from Venetian ciao, earlier s-ciao / s-ciavo, “servant”, from Medieval Latin sclavus, “Slav, slave”. It once meant something like “I am your humble servant.” It is a doublet of English Slav and slave. It is not related to Vietnamese chào, even though that can also mean hello.
