Churchillian means of Winston Churchill, or in his style. Winston Churchill (1874–1965) was a British Conservative politician, and prime minister during most of World War II and again from 1951 to 1955. Most British people still remember him as a great wartime leader who helped make Britain’s victory possible, and as the man whose radio speeches tried to keep the country believing it could win. So a Churchillian speech is big, rolling, and full of fight; Churchillian stubbornness is the kind that will not give in. The word is Churchill’s surname plus -ian, ‘of or like him.’ It looks a little like church, but it is not a church word.
