A chrysanthemum is a garden plant grown for its flowers. The blooms are often large and round, with many packed in, and they come in yellow, white, red, pink and more — though the old Greek name was for a golden-yellow kind. In English the full word sounds a little fancy, and it is a mouthful; , especially in American English, often it to “mum.” English speakers mainly meet it as a florist’s flower or a late-year garden flower, still opening when many other plants are finished. In East Asia the same flower carries more: autumn, tea, medicine, and respect. English does not always pack all of that into the word; it can just mean “that round autumn flower in the shop.” You will see the long name in writing more than you hear it in casual chat.
組成From Latin chrȳsanthemum, from Greek khrūsánthemon, a golden-yellow flower (a kind of Persian buttercup). The Greek is built from khrusós, “gold,” + ánthemon, “flower.”
