A chowderhead is a stupid person. It is a blunt, informal insult, more American than British, and a little old and comic rather than vicious. You might hear it in an old film, or when someone is teasing, not in a school essay. Though actually, it looks like chowder (the soup) plus head, as if someone had soup for brains — but that is probably a folk story. Scholars think it comes from a variant of the older insult jolterhead, not from the soup. Do not use it of a real person you do not know well; even when it sounds funny, it is rude.
