When water is choppy, the surface is broken into lots of small, short . It is not a calm lake, and it is not one long smooth swell either: it jumps, slaps, and makes a small boat bounce. Sailors, fishers, and weather reports use this word a lot; it is ordinary English, not fancy. People stretch it in the same picture to other uneven things — choppy writing that stops and starts, choppy hair cut in messy lengths — though the home sense is water.
