To chomp is to bite and chew in a big, noisy, eager way — not tiny polite bites. You chomp on an apple, a burger, gum. It is informal, more American than British, and a little playful; it makes you hear the jaw. People also say chomp down on something. Though actually, it is a US shape of an older verb champ, “to bite or grind the teeth”. Horses champ (or chomp) at the bit when they are impatient to go, and English borrowed that picture: if a person is chomping at the bit, they are restless and cannot wait. That is still about biting, just stretched to a feeling.
