A choirmaster is the person who teaches a choir to sing together. He or she chooses the music, teaches the notes, and keeps everyone in time — a teacher and a leader in one. The word is most at home in churches and in older or British English. In an American school you are more likely to hear choir director or chorus teacher. Master here means a skilled person in charge, not “a boy” and not someone who owns people. English built the word from choir + master, copying the German idea of a Chormeister. There is a close twin, chorusmaster, built the same way with chorus instead of choir.
