A chloride is a chemical made when joins with something else. The one everybody already knows, even without the name, is sodium chloride — ordinary table salt. The sodium and the are locked together in a crystal; that is not the dangerous green gas sitting in your kitchen. Chemists name many of these: potassium chloride, calcium chloride, and so on. In science class, chloride can also mean the piece in those salts. It is a fairly technical word: cooks say salt; scientists say sodium chloride. You meet it on labels, in lab work, and in blood tests. Though actually, people sometimes say chloride when they mean , the gas. That is sloppy. is the element; a chloride is a compound that contains it, usually a salt. The ending -ide is the chemists’ way of saying “this is combined with another substance”.
