1. 1

Chipboard is a cheap, flat board made from small chips and dust of wood, mixed with glue and pressed hard. You meet it in flat-pack furniture, kitchen cabinets, the back of a wardrobe, and sometimes under a floor. It is not a single piece of timber, and it is not plywood (plywood is thin layers of wood glued in sheets). Chipboard swells if it stays wet, the edges look rough unless they are covered, and screws do not hold as kindly as they do in real wood. Shops may also call it particle board. Though actually, people sometimes say chipboard for any cheap fake-wood furniture, even when the board is MDF, which is finer dust, not chips.
