A chinchilla is a small animal from the high in South America. It is about as big as a rabbit, with round ears and fur so thick that water hardly gets in. People keep them as pets, and they were also bred for that fur — wild chinchillas suffered because of it. They are mostly awake at night, and they clean themselves in dust, not in a bath of water; getting wet is bad for them. The English name comes from Spanish. You may also meet Chinchilla as a family name, from a place in Spain; that surname is common in Costa Rica. Same spelling, different story — it is not a second meaning of the animal word.
