A chimpanzee is a large, clever animal from the forests of Africa. It looks a little like a monkey, but it has no tail, it is bigger, and it is closer to humans than a monkey is. Chimpanzees live in groups, use sticks and stones as tools, and can learn signs. In everyday talk people often say chimp. It is not an orangutan (that animal lives in Asia and is usually more red-brown) and not a gorilla (that one is much heavier). The English name is not from Latin school-words; it came from a Bantu language of Angola, and it probably passed through French before English writers used it. The first English use we can point to is from 1738.
