A chimney-piece is the part built onto a fireplace, usually of brick, stone, or wood, so the fire has a frame and often a shelf above it. It is what you see in the room, not the long chimney that carries smoke out through the roof. This is rather old British English. Many people now say or just mantel for the same thing. You will still meet chimney-piece in older books and in writing about old houses. Taiwan homes almost never have a fireplace, so you may only need this word when you read about a cold country or watch a film set in one.
