1. 1

A chimenea is a round pot, clay or metal, with a short chimney on top, in which you make a fire. People set it in a garden to keep guests warm outside. It is an outdoor heater, not the chimney on a house, and not a full indoor fireplace. You buy one for a patio; you do not build it into a wall. Though actually, English already had chimney for the roof-pipe, and this Spanish word came in later for the garden stove — same old root, different object.

In this age of sensitivity to global warming we've come to be wary of them […], but somehow those strange little chimineas seem to have warmed the hearts of the nation. I've always found them a bit odd looking – like something from The Hobbit – and you do need to position them where they can do their job without endangering life, limb and property.
