Something childproof is made so that a small child cannot easily open it, break it, or get hurt by it. Medicine bottles, electric sockets, locks, and some car windows can be childproof. The -proof bit means 'safe against', the same idea as in waterproof. Parents also use it as a verb: to childproof a house means to walk around and add locks, covers, and gates before a baby starts crawling. Though actually, nothing is perfectly childproof. A determined four-year-old will still try. The word promises 'much harder for a child', not 'impossible'.
