Childbirth is the act of having a baby: the labour and the moment the child is born. Doctors and midwives use it as a clear, slightly formal word. In everyday talk people also say having a baby or giving birth. Though actually, childbirth names that event, not the months of pregnancy before it, and not the years of raising the child after it. Childbearing is a little wider — it can mean the whole business of carrying and having children.

組成From Middle English childbyrth. It is child + birth. It may be a partial copy of Old Norse barnburðr, literally “bairn-birth” (bairn is an old word for child). Swedish and Icelandic have close sister-words.
