Chiffon is a very light, thin cloth, usually silk or nylon, thin enough that you can see through it. It is used for dresses, scarves, and ; it floats, and it creases if you crush it. In a clothes shop, chiffon just names that fabric. Though actually, many in Taiwan meet the English word first on a menu: chiffon cake. The cake was named after the cloth because both feel soft and airy — but the cake is food, not fabric, and the Chinese names are different. The English fabric name was borrowed from French, where chiffon once meant a scrap of old rag.

組成Borrowed from French chiffon, from Middle French chiffe, an old rag, from Old French chipe, from Middle English chip / chippe (a small piece, a splinter). English chip went into French as a rag-word and came back as the name of a fine cloth.
