A chickpea is a round, seed you cook and eat. English puts pea in the name, but it is really a kind of bean: hard when dry, nutty and a little soft after you boil it. Hummus is crushed chickpeas. You also find them in salads, curries, and snacks. In some places people say or bean for the same food — that name came through Spanish. They are not sweet like the small green peas you eat with a fork, and they have nothing to do with chickens. The “chick” is an old French name for this plant, not the bird.

組成English copied French pois chiche: pois means “pea,” and chiche came from Old French cice, from Latin cicer, the old name for this plant. So chickpea is “chiche-pea,” not “chicken pea.”
