When something is chichi, it looks very fashionable and expensive — a dress, a restaurant, a hotel lobby — but there is often a little smile in the word. People mean it is stylish, and also a bit too much: , , trying hard. You can call a person chichi too, if they care a great deal about looking fashionable, sometimes more than feels easy or natural. It is informal. It is not a kind compliment, but it is not a very heavy insult either; it is closer to rolling your eyes. English borrowed it from French chichi, which already had this “extra, ” feeling. You will see it written chichi or chi-chi.
