A bagel, dried fruit, , or a cookie that is soft in the middle can all be chewy, and people often like that springy bite. In Taiwan, friends praise a snack as 很Q — that pleasant chew is close to this English word. Though actually, chewy is not always kind. Meat that is hard work to finish is also chewy, and then the speaker is complaining. The word is about the jaw, not about flavour: a chewy sweet can still be too sweet. It is ordinary kitchen talk. You may also hear a chewy as a noun for a sweet you keep chewing, like a toffee.
