    A chesterfield is a deep, comfortable sofa, covered in leather, with lots of buttons pressed into the back and arms. That , heavy look is what many people picture. The name comes from an English lord, the 4th Earl of Chesterfield, who asked for the first such couch to be made in the 1700s.

    Though actually, where you live changes the word. In Britain it often still points to that particular buttoned sofa. In Canada, for a long time, chesterfield was just the everyday word for any sofa — grandmother’s living-room seat, not a special style. Younger Canadians now more often say sofa or couch. In the United States the word is less common. There is also a kind of coat called a chesterfield, but that is a different thing.

組成From the title Chesterfield. Named after Philip Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield (1694–1773), who commissioned the first such couch.
