Chenille is a soft, fuzzy thread, or the thick cloth made from it. Each bit of thread looks a little like a tiny brush — fat, hairy, and a bit like a caterpillar. That likeness is the whole point of the name. People use chenille for bedspreads, cushions, curtains, and sometimes for jumpers and scarves. A chenille sofa or a chenille throw feels warm and a bit old-fashioned, the kind of thing you see in a family living room. In shops, “chenille” can mean the yarn you buy to knit or sew with, or the finished cloth; both uses are normal. It is a home-and-craft word more than a school word.
