Cheltenham is a town in western England. It became famous as a spa: people came to drink the spring water and rest. It is also famous for horse racing. The Cheltenham Festival in spring is a huge race meeting, and sports news often says Cheltenham when it means the , not the town shops. The town has well-known public schools — and here is the messy British truth: in the UK a public school is an old, expensive private school, not a free school run by the government. who map it onto 公立學校 get the social picture backwards. Say the name CHELT-uh-nuhm; the -ham is weak, not like the word ham.
組成English place names ending in -ham often meant a homestead or village. The first part of Cheltenham is not a living English word, and I would not swear to the old story of that piece.
