Chelsea is an area in the southwest of central London, north of the River Thames. King’s Road runs through it. It is known for expensive housing, fashionable shops, and a kind of well-dressed city life. Chelsea Football Club took its name from this place, so many hear Chelsea and think only of football — though actually the district is much older than the club, and when say they live in Chelsea they mean the streets, not the stadium. The name comes from Old English Ċealchȳþ: cealc ‘chalk’ plus hȳþ ‘landing place’ — a chalk landing on the river. It is a place name, so it stays Chelsea in every sentence.
