Chekhovian means of Chekhov, or in the manner of Chekhov. Anton Chekhov (1860–1904) was a Russian writer of plays and short stories; he was also a doctor. usually meet him through three plays: The Seagull, Uncle Vanya, and The Cherry Orchard. When someone calls a scene Chekhovian, they rarely mean only ‘written by him.’ They mean a quiet kind of sadness: people sit around, talk about small things, miss what the other person is feeling, and life does not explode at the end — it just goes on. Nothing loud happens, and that is the point. It is a teachers’ and critics’ word more than a street word. You form it the usual way: the name Chekhov + -ian, ‘like that person.’
