A château is a castle or a large country house in France, often with land around it. It may still be a family home, a museum, or a wine estate. English keeps the French word because castle makes many students picture thick walls and soldiers, while a lot of French châteaux are grand houses more than forts. Wine see Château on labels: that is often the estate that made the wine, named after the house. People stretch the word for any very fancy house that “feels French,” though careful speakers keep it for France. In English the little hat on the a is often dropped (château → chateau). In careful writing the plural is still the French one, châteaux. We say it roughly like “sha-TOE,” not like English chat.
