    Chastening is the adjective (and the -ing form) of : a chastening experience is one that makes you realise you were wrong, too sure, or not as good as you thought. A failed exam, a lost match, a kind but honest comment — afterwards you feel smaller and wiser. English likes this shape: we say a chastening defeat, a chastening reminder, rather than “an experience that me,” though both are fine. It is formal-to-neutral writing language, common in news and essays. It does not mean “becoming chaste” (more sexually modest), and it is not a gentle massage of the word chaste. Keep the link to the verb: if nothing made you see your mistake, it was not chastening.
