If you are chary of something, you do not want to risk it. You hold back. You may be chary of giving your phone number, chary of trusting a new plan, chary of spending the last of your money. It is a quiet, rather adjective — more at home in writing than in the — and it often takes of: chary of doing X. The feeling is careful, a little suspicious, not frozen with fear. Older English also used chary for “dear” and even for “sad,” because the word grew from the same root as care; that sad meaning has mostly died, and the “unwilling to take a chance” meaning is the one you will meet. It is not the same as cheap, and it is not cheery.

組成Built like care + -y. From Old English ċeariġ, “careful, anxious, sad,” from the same family as care. It once also meant sorrowful; that sense has largely gone.
