In Greek myth, Charon is the ferryman of the dead. When a person died, their soul had to cross the river Styx to reach Hades, the land of the dead. Charon took them in his boat — but only if they paid. Families put a coin with the body for him. He is not a kind god people pray to; he is a grim worker at the edge of death. Though actually, later named ’s big moon Charon. Some Americans say that moon’s name more like “Sharon,” after a family nickname; in a myth class you usually hear a hard opening sound, closer to “Care-on.” This entry is the , not the moon.
