A chantry is a small church, or a side room inside a bigger church, that a rich person paid for in the Middle Ages. The deal was simple and a little uneasy: after they died, priests would keep praying for their soul there — often by singing those prayers — in the hope that God would treat them kindly. The building and the money set aside to keep the priests praying were both called a chantry. You meet the word in history books and in old English churches, not in daily talk. It is a Christian, European, mostly medieval idea. It is not a Taiwanese 功德堂, though the wish is not so far away: please do not forget me; please keep speaking for me when I am gone. Though actually, the tidy picture (“one chapel, one dead lord”) was often messier — a chantry could be an altar, a side chapel, or a whole little church, and the priests might be paid to pray for a whole family, not one person. In England many were later shut down, which is why school history still bothers with the word.
