A chandelier is a big light that hangs from the ceiling, usually in the middle of a room. The old ones held real candles; most ones you see now hold electric bulbs. The shape is often round, or like a tree with many arms, and it is typically dressed with small pieces of glass that catch the light and throw little sparks around the room. You meet them in hotels, theatres, wedding halls, and old houses that want to look grand. A plain hanging lamp is not a chandelier — the word still carries a feeling of show and shine. Though actually, shops will put the word on almost any fancy hanging light, so it has stretched a little.
