The chancel is the part of a traditional church where the altar stands and where the priests and the choir sit — usually the east end, a little set apart from the nave, where the rest of the people sit. A screen or a few steps often mark the line. You meet the word in church architecture and in writing about old buildings. It is not the whole church. It is not a chapel (a smaller place of worship, or a side room). And it is not the choir as a group of singers, though the choir sits in the chancel. Everyday may just say “the front” or “by the altar”; chancel is the more exact building word.
組成From Old French chancel. Doublet of Latin cancellus, a lattice or screen: this part of the church was once shut off by a screen.
