A chamberlain was, in the past, an important official who ran the household of a king or queen. The job began with the private rooms — the chambers — but it grew into a high court post: money, ceremony, and who was allowed near the ruler. Britain still has a Lord Chamberlain, a royal officer who helps with state occasions and, for a long time, also licensed plays. You meet the word in history, in old novels, and in a few living British titles. It is not a modern word for a hotel manager; that would sound as if you had put the person in a palace. As a family name it is common (you may know Neville Chamberlain), but this entry is the old court office.
組成From Middle English chamberlein, from Anglo-Norman / Old French, from Frankish *kamarling: *kamer (chamber) + *-ling (a person belonging to that thing). The same “room” idea sits behind chamber.
