In English cafés, chai is a sweet, milky tea cooked with warm — typically , cinnamon, ginger, sometimes cloves or black pepper. The drink comes from India. There, the everyday word chai just means “tea.” What English speakers usually order as “chai” is closer to masala chai: black tea with milk, sugar, and mixed . So if you think of a milk tea, you are in the right family of drinks; it is not bubble tea, and it is not plain black tea. Shops often write “chai ” or even “chai tea.” The second of those is widely used, though it is a bit like saying “tea tea.” The word is casual and common on menus.

From Hindi/Urdu cāy 'tea', from Persian, ultimately from Chinese 茶 chá.
借自印地語、烏爾都語 cāy，經波斯文源自漢語「茶」。
組成From Hindustani cāy, “tea,” from Persian čāy; that family of words goes back to Chinese 茶. The same root gave English tea by one old trade route and cha by another.
