The cha-cha is a lively Latin dance. Dancers take small, quick steps, often almost on the same spot, with a little catch in the beat that matches the music. That “cha-cha” sound in the rhythm is how the dance got its name. It comes from Cuba and the wider Latin American world, and you still meet it at weddings, dance halls, and ballroom classes. English also uses it as a verb: you can cha-cha across the floor. It is just the ordinary name of the dance, not slang. Salsa feels more flowing; the cha-cha is the one with those neat, snappy little steps. People also say cha-cha-cha for the same dance, counting the extra beat.
