The CEO is the person with the most authority in a large company: the top boss, the one chosen to run the whole business. The letters stand for Chief Executive Officer. You see the title in news, job ads, and company reports. In everyday talk people often just say “the CEO,” even when they never say the three full words. Though actually, people stretch it. Someone who starts a tiny shop may joke “I’m the CEO,” but the real title points at the top job in a big firm. The CEO is not always the owner — the owner may sit on the board and hire the CEO to run things. In Britain you will also meet managing director for a similar role; CEO has become the more international label.
