A centurion was an army officer in ancient Rome. He was the person in charge of a group of about a hundred soldiers — not a king, not a general, but the officer those men had to obey day to day. You meet the word in history class, in the Bible, and in films about Rome. Nobody has this job now, except as a costume or a nickname. Though actually, the tidy “one hundred” is the name, not always the real count. The size of the group changed over the years. The title stuck because of the Latin word for a hundred, not because every unit was counted out like a school class.

組成From Middle English centurioun, from Latin centuriō, centuriōnis (“a commander of a hundred”), from Latin centum (“a hundred”). English once also said hundreder and hundredman for the same kind of officer; those older native words fell away.
