A creature from ancient Greek stories: a human head, chest and arms joined to the body and four legs of a horse. In the old stories centaurs are usually wild and rough — they drink too much and start fights — with one famous exception, Chiron, who was wise and taught heroes. Modern readers mostly meet them in fantasy books, films and games, where they tend to be noble archers instead. English uses the word almost only for the creature; it is not a common metaphor, though writers occasionally call something a centaur when it is two very different things joined into one body — a human-and-computer chess team, for example.
組成From Latin centaurus, from Greek kéntauros. What the Greek word originally meant is genuinely unknown — it was the name of a wild people or tribe before it was the name of a creature, and the neat explanations you sometimes see are guesses.
