    A musical instrument that looks like a large violin. You sit down and hold it between your knees, and you play it by pulling a bow (a special stick) across its strings.

    cello 就是中文的「大提琴」——小提琴家族裡比較大的那一把。認 cello 最快的方法可以想成「姿勢」：violin 架在肩膀上、站著拉；cello 要坐下來，琴身立在地上、夾在兩個膝蓋中間，所以它比小提琴大很多，聲音也低沉、溫暖得多。中文說「拉」大提琴，英文一律用 play，而且樂器前面要加 the：play the cello。拉大提琴的人叫 cellist（大提琴手）。

You can picture a big violin that is too large to hold under your chin, so the player sits down and lets it rest between the knees, its tail-pin on the floor, while the bow is drawn across the strings at chest height. The size is the whole point: a bigger body of wood holds more air, and more air means a lower, warmer, more human-sounding voice.
