CE is written after a year to show that the year is counted from around the birth of Christ — the same count as AD. So 2024 CE is the same year as AD 2024. CE stands for Common Era (some older books say Christian Era). People started using CE, and BCE (“before the Common Era”), instead of AD and BC, because CE does not put a church title on the date: AD comes from Latin for “in the year of the Lord.” Historians, museums, and many textbooks prefer CE and BCE; churches and everyday English still often use AD and BC. You write the letters after the number: 1066 CE. You do not usually say “in the CE” the way some people say “in AD 1066.” In Taiwan the everyday word for this dating is 西元, not the letters CE. One more trap: on plugs and chargers, CE in a little mark is a European safety label, from French words for “European agreement.” That mark is not a date.
