A CD-R is a kind of compact disc you can put information onto yourself — music, photos, or computer files — using a writer on a computer. The R stands for recordable. The important limit: you can record onto it only once. After you “burn” the disc (that is the usual verb), you cannot wipe it clean and start again. You can sometimes add more files later if space is left, but you cannot erase what is already there. Blank CD-Rs were very common in the 1990s and 2000s; people used them to copy music or to hand in school work. Younger people may hardly use them now, because USB sticks and phones are easier, but the name still appears in older manuals and exam lists. Do not mix it up with a , which you can record onto many times, or with a CD-ROM, which usually comes already filled and is not for you to record onto.
