The CBI is a British organisation that speaks for employers and managers — the people who run companies. Its full name is the Confederation of British Industry. A confederation here just means a large group of businesses standing together. The CBI puts out reports on how the economy is doing and tries to push the government toward rules that help its members: tax, trade, hiring, that sort of thing. You meet it in UK news: “the CBI said growth was slowing.” The tone is official and newspaper-like, not street talk. Though actually, the same three letters in India mean something completely different: the Central Bureau of Investigation, a police body. This entry is the British business one.
