CBBC is the BBC’s name for the programmes it makes for older children and teenagers in Britain — dramas, cartoons, magazines, live presenters, the afternoon and after-school mix. The letters come from Children’s BBC. It is a brand for those shows, and it is also the name of a digital television channel that runs them. It is not for the very youngest: the BBC keeps a separate, softer brand, CBeebies, for little kids. If you grew up in the UK, CBBC is as familiar as a school badge. Outside Britain, most people have never heard of it. It is a proper name, so you say CBBC, not “the cbbc,” and you do not translate the letters one by one in speech.
