A caver is a person who goes into caves for sport. They walk, climb, crawl, and sometimes swim through dark rock under the ground, usually with a helmet, a headlamp, and friends who know the cave. The word belongs to that sport: you would not normally call someone a caver just because they once walked through a tourist cave with lights and a guide. It is an informal, friendly word among people who do this. A scientist who studies caves is often called something else (a speleologist); a caver may love the science, but the word itself is about going in, not about writing papers.
