A cathode is one of the two ends of a thing that carries electric current — a battery, a tube, a diode. In many school books it is the minus end, marked (−), and they say current leaves the equipment there. Though actually this is one of the messiest science words we have, and that tidy picture is tidier than real talk. In an old radio valve, or in many electronic parts, the cathode is the negative side. In a battery that is giving you power, chemists name the cathode by what the chemistry is doing at that end — and that end is the plus end. So “cathode = minus” is true in some machines and false in others. The name was made in 1834 by William Whewell for Michael Faraday, from Greek kata- “down” and hodos “way, road”: a “way down”. Faraday pictured current as a journey downward onto that end. The other end is the , the “way up”.
