If something is cathartic, it helps you get a strong feeling out so you feel cleaner afterwards. A long honest talk can be cathartic; so can a film that makes you weep, or writing a letter you never send. It is the adjective that sits next to . Formal, at home in essays and in careful talk about feelings. There is also an older doctor-use: a cathartic medicine makes you empty your bowels — the same “cleaning out” idea, but for the body. The feeling-word is the one meet first. Though actually the two uses are one family: both mean “that purges.”
