    A catcall is a loud whistle or shout that says 'we do not like this.' In a theatre, a meeting, or a speech, people catcall to send at the speaker or the show — a kind of ugly noise from the crowd. The name is from the 1600s, from cat + call, because the sound was thought to resemble cats crying at night, not because anyone is calling a cat over. Though actually, in a lot of modern talk, especially American talk, catcall is also the whistle or rude shout aimed at a stranger in the street, often a woman. That use is not about a performance at all; people treat it as unwanted, rude attention. Same word, two worlds: the old one is the crowd against a stage; the newer one is a stranger against a person walking by.
