Catalan is the language of Catalonia, the area around Barcelona in Spain. It grew out of Latin, like Spanish and French, but it is not a dialect of Spanish, though many visitors treat it as one. People there often grow up with both Catalan and Spanish. You will also hear close forms of it in Valencia, the Balearic Islands, , a corner of southern France, and even one town in . Though actually, some people in Valencia insist their language is Valencian, not Catalan; linguists often group them together, and the naming is a political fight as much as a language one. Catalan also names a person from that culture. In English it takes a capital C.
