The Castro is a district in San Francisco, in the United States. Since the late twentieth century it has been famous as a lively, fashionable neighbourhood where many gay people live, meet, and go out — rainbow flags, bars, shops, and a long history of fighting for gay rights in that city. Visitors come for the atmosphere as much as for the streets.
