You can think of 'casting' as the moment of pouring something into a shape so it takes that form. Pour hot metal into a mould and it hardens into the shape you chose — that physical act of 'pouring into a mould to give form' is the root picture. The film sense it: you 'pour' actors into the roles (the moulds) of a story.
